Description: For sale is a fine small German carved wood portrait plaque of “Der Herr Schullehrer”, or “Mr. Schoolteacher”, dated 1897. The framed picture measures 6 inches wide by 6 inches tall; the plaque itself is about 4 ¼ inches square. The plaque is finely carved out with a picture of a man in profile, wearing a large hat and holding a German pipe. It is titled “DER HERR SCHULLEHRER” and is signed “Rint897”. The panel is loosely set into a molded silvered gesso frame; there are some modern spacers added to hold it in place. It has a simple wire hanging loop. The back of the panel is inscribed “4/a” in pencil. Condition on the picture is as found. The edge of the figure’s spectacles is broken off and missing, unfortunately, but that is the only damage. The plaque is loose in the frame and need a little work. A fine piece of wood carving!
