Description: This is a seldomly seen and Fine Antique Early California TONALIST Plein Air Impressionist Landscape Oil Painting on Canvas, attributed to Josephine Mary Culbertson (1852 - 1941,) an early Carmel, California Impressionist landscape painter. This artwork likely dates to the late 1910's and depicts a luminist and finely detailed rural landscape scene at sunset, with delicately painted cloud cover above, and a sparse tree line, calm stream, and lush grasslands visible below. This artwork is mounted in a gorgeous original period gilded wood "pie crust" frame and is signed: "Josephine" in the lower left corner. I believe that this artwork is an early painting by Josephine Mary Culbertson, created soon after she had moved from Boston, Massachusetts to Carmel, California in 1905. Believe It or Not, there is only one listed artist in the whole history of the world with the first name Josephine, according to AskArt, and it is Josephine Mary Culbertson. In conclusion, considering that this Impressionist landscape painting was found in California, and is signed: "Josephine," I believe there is some degree of certainty with my attribution. I invite you to do your own research! Approximately 16 1/4 x 24 1/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 14 x 22 inches. Good overall condition for well over a century of age and storage, with a few small tears and mild areas of paint loss across the painted surface, and moderate scuffing, edge wear and gilding loss to the original period early 20th century gilded wood "pie crust" frame (please see photos carefully.) Acquired from an old estate collection in Pasadena, California. Priced to Sell. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Culbertson and Miss Ida A. Johnson, of 193 St. James place, are two happy and able workers who united in a joint studio reception recently, which was a delight to their many friends. Earnest students of nature, both, their work, though widely different in character to that intelligent research that alone can bring success. Miss Culbertsonβs able flower and landscape work, in oil and watercolor, shows evidence of the careful teaching of such excellent masters as George H. Smillie, Rhoda Holmes Nichols and William M. Chase and beyond that an individuality all her own β a poetical interpretation and appreciation of the subtler beauties of nature that invests her work with a peculiar charm,β per Brooklyn Life (Brooklyn, N. Y.), May 20, 1893, p. 10, col. 2; βFinally, on August 8, 1927, twenty artists met in the studio of Josephine Culbertson to hear Jennie Vennerstrom Cannon, a new resident, tell about the founding of the Laguna Beach Art Association in 1918. Enthusiastically, a Carmel Art Association was organized along the same lines,β per essay by Betty Hoag McGlynn on the founding of the Carmel Art Assn., in Ruth Lilly Westphal, Plein Air Painters of California, The North, 1986.
