Description: This watercolor titled "The Klezmer" is a wonderful example of American artist Ervin B. Nussbaum's (1914-96) later artistic works. This black and white painting captures the essential role of musicians in community life. Klezmer is a Yiddish word which is often used to refer to a male professional musician, most often Jewish, who is hired to play music for community and cultural events. These bands were common fixtures at wedding celebrations. Klezmer music is a genre derived from the instrumental traditions of Ashkenazi Jews of Central and Eastern Europe. This painting is believed to date from the 1960s-70s based on the framing and Nussbaum's artistic progression. It was professionally framed by Joseph "Andre" Lizak, who retired in 1986. Moreover, Nussbaum, who was initially known for his abstract landscapes, shifted his focus to depictions of Jewish religious and cultural life by 1960. His artworks have been exhibited throughout the United States and are included in international museum collections, including the Frankfurt Museum of Modern Art (MMK) in Germany. The medium-sized artwork measures 20 inches in length, 18 inches in height, and 2 inches in width. The sight size of the watercolor is approximately 9 inches by 12 inches- it was not examined outside of the frame but appears to be in great condition. Please see photos for condition details. The watercolor comes professionally matted and framed. The frame is silver painted with a woven mat, and only the watercolor is under glass. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right corner.
