Thomas Jefferson, who lived from 1743-1826, was the 3rd President of the U.S., 1801-1809. No other founding father had as powerful and as lasting an effect on the future of the new nation. Politician, poet, architect, philosopher, lawyer, farmer, philanthropist, scientist, inventor, writer---Jefferson was all of these things. Jefferson rose to fame as one of the most outspoken of the American revolutionaries. A graduate of the College of William and Mary, and an attorney who had studied with GEORGE WYETH, Jefferson secured a prominent place in history as the author of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson served as Governor of Virginia, Vice President with JOHN ADAMS, and later as President of the U.S. He kept the young nation out of war and arranged the LOUISIANA PURCHASE, which doubled the territory of the U.S. He fought and won passage of a bill that nearly halved the sale price of government-owned lands, thus encouraging settlement of the West. Jefferson organized and helped plan the LEWIS and CLARK EXPEDITION of 1804. Jefferson married MARTHA WAYLES and they became parents to two daughters, Mary and Martha, who married THOMAS MANN RANDOLPH. When Jefferson retired from the Presidency in 1809, he returned to MONTICELLO where he lived with Martha and his 11 grandchildren. He is "rumored" to have fathered several children with his mulatto, SALLY HEMINGS. Monticello was the name of a mountain, the name of a farm, and above all the name of a house. When Jefferson returned from France in 1790, he remodeled Monticello, stating "Architecture is my delight." Jefferson's estate was in sad repair when he left the presidency. In 1810, Jefferson described his daily routine: "My mornings are devoted to correspondence. From breakfast to dinner, I am in my shops, my garden, or on horseback among my farms; from dinner to dark, I give to society and recreation with my neighbors and friends, and from candle light to early bed-time, I read." Jefferson was the founder of the UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, and an opponent of slavery---although he owned hundreds of slaves.
