Description: Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Elizabeth Fisher - 1821. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following verse with a tall floral motif to both sides and underlined with a floral border Jesus permit thy gracious name to standAs the first effort of an infants handAnd as my fingers on the canvas moveEngage my sinful heart to seek thy loveWith thy dear children Lord give me a partAnd write thy law dear Jesus upon my heart The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central stone plinth with a crown lion standing on top with a flower bowl, fruit basket and tree to his left and right, all underlined with an arcaded floral border. The lower section of the linen is stitched with the following short verse with a rose basket to each side and underlined with a meandering rose border Learn to contemn all praise betimesFor flattery is the nurse of crimesWith early virtue plant thy breast The specious arts of vice detest There is a central scallop edged plaque beneath the verse containing Elizabeth's name and the date of 1821 with a fruit basket to both sides, then the whole piece is surrounded by a floral border, the top and bottom edges partially obscured by the frame.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, very slightly darker in places with a few very small areas of damage. One is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a later, clean backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a mid 20th century stained pine frame with decorative inner and outer detailing which can hopefully be seen clearly in the penultimate photo. The frame is in good condition with some light scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. Measures 12 1/4" x 13 3/4" (sight size) and 15 1/4" x 16 3/4" including the frame. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE! PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
