Description: Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ann Broadhurst - 1833. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central plaque with a bird to each side and containing the following short but very sweet verse Lord tis a pleasant thing to stand In gardens planted by thine handLet me within thy courts be seenLike a young cedar fresh and green Ann's name and the date of A.D.1833 are contained within the middle section of the linen with a pair of birds standing on a blossom branch centrally beneath with a butterfly and open tailed peacock beside them and two fruit baskets below. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central-ish flower bowl with a crested bird standing to both sides, each with a tree beside them with a bird on top. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep arcaded carnation border. The linen has overall, somewhat brown discolouration consistent with its age, paler in parts of the edges with darker streak running down the body of the bird to the left of the verse. There is also a small area of damage in the same area and one is able to see through this that the sampler is sitting on a similar coloured backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There are areas of stitch loss to the long stitch work of the carnation border. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century maple frame with gilt slip. Both are in fair to good condition with the slip having small chips and age related rubbing revealing the gesso beneath. The frame has scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age with a small old repair to the veneer on the upper right corner. There are also losses to both lower corners which can be seen on the penultimate photo. There is also minor separation to the veneer on the outer side edges but in my opinion nothing to be concerned about.
