Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) DOLLAR: THE GLEN AND CASTLE. Dollar is a village about ten miles from Stirling. The ruined Castle is very conspicuous on a height above the village, and is surrounded by deep gorges. The first Earl of Argyll changed its name by a special Act in 1489 to Castle Campbell, previous to which it was popularly known as the Castle of Gloom, in the parish of Dolour, surrounded by the glen of Care. It was sacked and burnt by Montrose in 1645, and has since been uninhabited. The chief feature is the square keep, probably dating from the twelfth century; the wing is more recent. Proceeding from the village up the glen, the latter forks before the Castle is reached, and visitors usually ascend by the right branch and return by the other, which at one point narrows into a rocky gorge less than io feet wide
