Travel with Tika and Caramon in search of her father, Alleran Waylan. Help a group of kender track down an aging black dragon. Go with Riverwind and Goldmoon to reclaim the settlement of Que Shu. Or, aid Tanis on a touchy diplomatic mission - to Laurana's people.Players can once again take the parts of the Heroes of the Lance, and participate in the rebuilding of one of the greatest fantasy worlds ever created: the world of Krynn, the home of the Dragonlances.Ownership of the Tales of the Lance set is not required in order to play these adventures, but is suggested.Product HistoryDLT1: "New Tales — The Land Reborn" (1993), by John Terra, is a Dragonlance adventure anthology. It was published in July 1993.Origins (I): Another New Beginning. A year after the publication of Tales of the Lance (1992) and nine months after the sudden truncation of the "DLQ" line (1992) in favor of classic adventures, new Dragonlance products were back with a new adventure anthology.Origins (II): Return of the Heroes. Tim Beach reports that the previous "DLQ" Dragonlance series wasn't selling enough, which led TSR to "to repackage the 'classic' material." DLT1: "New Tales — The Land Reborn" (1993) may have been a continuation of that plan; though it once more presented new material, it firmly returned to concepts central to the original Dragonlance Chronicles (1984-1986) adventures."New Tales" is set just a few years after the War of the Lance, and it focuses on rebuilding the land after that War. It also features many of the classic heroes, including Caramon, Gilthanas, Goldmoon, Laurana, Raistlin, Riverwind, Tanis, Tasslehoff, and Tika.Origins (III): Approaching the End. Unfortunately, the sudden termination of the previous "DLQ" series in the previous year would be indicative of where the Dragonlance line was going. "New Tales" was the last adventure proper for the Dragonlance line, though it would be followed by DLT2: "Book of Lairs" (1993).Adventure Tropes: Dragonlance Adventures. "New Tales" includes a short section talking about what Dragonlance adventures are. It says that they are not just "adventurers' stories", but stories that together form "a coherent whole of epic proportions". It also says that there's a moral component to Dragonlance stories, which should "promote the power of truth over falsehood, justice over injustice, and good over evil". Finally, it says that Dragonlance adventures "focus less on the combative aspects of the AD&D game, and more on thinking and role-playing".Adventure Tropes: An Anthology. "New Tales" is an anthology of four different adventures. They are generally episodic sandboxes, where the players are led from one location to another, but have room for exploration in each. The exception is "Of Love and Diplomacy" which has much less agency, as an episodic encounter adventure. Two of the adventure involve traveling across Krynn, but unlike the hex crawls of the early Dragonlance adventures, these are straight railroads. "Wayward Waylan" uses the tracking trope and "Of Love and Diplomacy" uses the escort trope."My Mother the Dragon" may be the most interesting because it's a racial adventure focused on the short and funny denizens of Krynn: kender, gully dwarves, and tinker gnomes.Ages of Krynn: 353 AC+ "New Tales" is almost a direct sequel to the Dragonlance Chronicles. The various adventures are set between 9 months and a year after the end of the War of the Lance. Two of the adventures also have the epic scope you'd expect of a Dragonlance adventure: "Rebirth" is about restoring the tribe of Que-Shu, while "Of Love and Diplomacy" is about the diplomatic negotiations between the three elven races, a nice complement to the restorative elven adventures found in the "DLS" series (1991).Exploring Krynn. The four adventures are very scattered, and two of them involve trekking across Ansalon."Wayward Waylan" moves from Solace in Abanasinia to Solanthus in Solamnia. It provides extensive descriptions (and maps) of Lemish, Newports, and Port O'Call."My Mother the Dragon" is set in Kendermore and details the village of Grimdel."Rebirth" is also set in Abanasinia, with a focus on Que-Shu."Of Love and Diplomacy" moves from Qualinesti to Southern Ergoth, but without much detail on the locales.NPCs of Note. The monstrous three-headed Malfesus, found in "Wayward Waylan", is the demigod son of Takhisis and Hiddukel. Decades later, Price of Courage (2006) explores his tomb and his continued influence.About the Creators. Terra had been freelancing for TSR since 1988. He'd previously contributed to DL15: "Mists of Krynn" (1988), DLR1: "Otherlands" (1990), DLS2: "Tree Lords" (1991), and Tales of the Lance (1992) .
