GOVERNOR DEWITT CLINTON - MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT SIGNED 01/05/1828 - HFSID 31323 DeWITT CLINTON. Manuscript Document signed: "DeWitt Clinton" as Governor, 1p, 8x12. Albany, New York, 1828 January 5. Clinton attests that since 1823 Richard Riker has been Recorder of the City of New York, and that full faith and credit may and ought to be given to his official actions. State seal (2¼x2¼) affixed at center left. From 1802-1803, DeWITT CLINTON was U.S. Senator, resigning to become Mayor of New York (1803-1807, 1808-1810 and 1811-1815). The son of Revolutionary War General James Clinton, DeWitt had been introduced to politics when he served as secretary to his uncle, New York's first Governor, George Clinton. In 1812, DeWitt Clinton was the unsuccessful Federalist candidate for President, losing in a close election to Democratic-Republican incumbent, James Madison by 128-89 electoral votes, 11-seven states. If Pennsylvania had gone Federalist, Clinton would have won, 114-103. Slightly soiled. Slightly frayed at edges. Horizontal folds. Faint ink transfer from another document visible in blank areas. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: GOVERNOR DEWITT CLINTON See more listings in our U.S. POLITICIANS (3,562) category.
