I was CAB Comment––“Deliverance” is one of those book (and film) titles, that when mentioned in polite conversation, pinpricks the groin with morbid unease––and in direct discussion drives home the hard point of any topic demanding weight or seriously grim propaganda. Most folks will not know Dickey’s infamous novel, but will be very familiar––at least by hearsay––of the extra-infamous John Boorman directed 1972 film adaptation starring Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight, and Ned Beatty. The book, as a companion and parallel, will not disappoint. Also, this particular book doesn’t disappoint in its show of age. I love how it truly looks as though it has survived the grim outback, dank woodsy experience that the story within its covers lays bare. This First Edition (3rd Printing) of James Dickey’s “Deliverance” will look beautifully unsettling displayed on any desk, table, or shelf. “Deliverance”––Kirkus Reviews: “James Dickey's first novel is an ambitious tale of adventure in which character is tested, quite literally, if preposterously, through action. Three more or less unexceptional middle class, middle-aged men, and one outdoors-man, undertake a canoe trip along the backlands of the South. They treat the weekend as a lark, but, as the title suggests, it is apparent that they yearn, consciously or unconsciously, to be set free from restraint. They are tempted, at different levels of excitement and expectation by the prospect of encountering nature and the elements, as well as recapturing, no doubt, the virility of youth. When the party by chance separates, disaster sets in: the narrator and Bobby, a feckless type, are assaulted at gun point by two mountaineers, one of whom (can he have been reading Sade?) buggers Bobby on a log. The offending mountaineer is subsequently shot by the trusty arrow of the crack outdoorsman, arriving, as they say, in the nick of time. The other mountaineer escapes. It is the narrator's fate, after sundry skirmishes and Saturday Evening Post elimination courses, to stalk the enemy and deliver the coup de grace. Dickey's prose style is muscular, tactile, pungent, luminous, raw, a marvelous instrument, as in the best of his poems, for evoking the towering presence of trees and rivers, earth and sky, as well as the sinuous movements of men under stress. It falters, and here and there ludicrously, when psychological amplification must accompany physical processes; the characters, though naturalistically drawn, seem fitful and dim, the figures of dream or nightmare. That, perhaps, is Dickey's intent. If so, a good deal more finesse, symbolic or otherwise, would surely seem necessary to sustain, or even make significant, such headlong events.” Always Great Things @ www.poetrope.com Books––Films––Music. BOOK PHOTOS: All book pictures are taken in bright white LED photo light, and thus brightness, contrast, and colors of books may appear more intense in photos than in person in the warmer incandescent lamp light of your home. In simpler terms, your new vintage books will fit right in with your cozy abode. Please remember: All books offered by Texas POEtrope are in need of a loving new home, and (other than C.A. Broadstone autographed works) have had previous owners, resulting in relative wear. Thus, some books possess more interesting scars telling of their journey through the world, and life, than others. Please study book pictures closely to be sure the book(s) shown are for you. Every book with a dust jacket has been carefully placed in a BroDart protective archival cover. All sales are final.
