The map recreates the battlefield and the defensive works of the battle, while the actual troops are represented by die-cut unit counters which are maneuvered on the map in response to player strategies and tactics. The crux of the game, however, is the set of detailed rules. After detailing basic concepts such as movement, stacking, zones of control and combat, several special rules and effects are implemented. For example, the turn sequence calls for enemy defensive artillery fire in the middle of the attacking player's turn; one possible result is that an entire attack may be disrupeted. Many other missions are also available for artillery units to perform, so that fortresses may be reduced, enemy movement may be interdicted and enemy supplies may be attacked. In addition, missions may be fired against enemy balloons in an effort to deny long range spotting capability. Supply rules call for an accounting of available ammunition for the guns, and some periods of fighting feature lulls in artillery as the big guns wait for resupply.
