Description: This commemorative medal, a so-called half dollar, was released in 1935 during the 75th anniversary of the Pony Express. This medal was produced for the Oregon Trail Memorial Association, which officially sponsored the Pony Express Diamond Jubilee commemoration. This very attractive pictorial medal has very detailed, high-relief (three dimensional) images. The obverse has an image of a Pony Express rider with his horse at full gallop, with the dates 1860 and 1935 and the words OREGON TRAIL MEMORIAL ASS'N. PONY EXPRESS DIAMOND JUBILEE. The reverse has an image of a 'relay station,' where the rider could change horses, rest, get food, etc. - with the words CHANGING PONIES RELAY STATION and, along the lower rim, the mark of the manufacturer (Whitehead & Hoag). The diameter is 32 mm (1-1/4"), and the composition is nickel alloy.
