Description: Bares Clermont-Ferrand SEATED MAN WITH BASKETS SALT DESVRES French Faience c1885 This rare and Double Salt Man Figurine: - is an Antique DANDY WITH BASKETS DOUBLE SALT DESVRES French Faience; - includes a man with an expressive face seated atop a plinth; - is wearing a period style floral patterned ensemble including collared shirt, a long jacket, knickers, socks with garters and buckled shoes, a tricorn hat; is seated between two large baskets; and is holding a cane in front; - has a recessed bottom underside which is glazed; the bottom foot rim is unglazed in the brown clay typical of the Desvres region; - has a makers mark on the underside: markings in blue under glaze of BARES Clermont-Ferrand. The modeling, decorating, and glaze are well done with typical colors of Desvres pottery: creamy white background decorated with blue, green, yellow, iron red, and manganese. The estimated date is circa 1885. This French Antique Bares Clermont-Ferrand SEATED MAN is in very good condition. Condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. This item is sold as is, as described. This is Desvres style fine country French art pottery. This style includes production techniques whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled terra cotta pottery form and fired several times in a kiln. It is noted that French Faience is not inherently "perfect" - larger pieces were still hand made in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over.
