John Senex (1678-1740) was an English Cartographer, engraver and map seller. Born in Ludlow, Shropshire Senex worked all of his career in London from premises in Fleet Street. One of the foremost Geographers in England, Senex was renowned for the detail and elegance of his maps, particularly his world maps. He became Geographer to Queen Anne and was elected to a Fellowship of the Royal Society in 1728. He was heavily influenced by the French Cartographer Guillaume de L’Isle, and is particularly known for his depiction of California as an Island detached from the North American continent. In 1719 he published 'An actual survey of all the principle roads of England and Wales'. It was re-published many time throughout the 18th Century. This comes from the French edition printed in 1767.
