Description: This antique 19th century wool Kashmir shawl is a family heirloom that would have either belonged to my great grandmother, but we think more likely was my great great grandmother's. It's in excellent antique condition, I actually had never even seen it before (in my 51 years of life) as it fortunately has been stored safely in a cedar chest for at least the last 50 years. After doing research I see that these are attributed to being made in either France, England, India or Scotland, I am not sure where this one was made unfortunately. The shawls that most closely match the style and quality of this one I believe to be made around the 1850's when they were greatly treasured and at the forefront of elegant fashion. This is a very fine piece measuring 68" x 68 1/2" (excluding fringe). The fringe I believe is silk and certain colors of the fringe border such as yellow are more worn and have fallen apart a bit more. But the fringe is still amazingly very much intact. The piece is very sturdy and structurally sound, there are 3 small areas where the weaving is a bit thin and worn, and also the green edging in one spot is a little tattered. There are two small stains (about the size of a nickel) but not very apparent. The last 5 photos document these items. Being that it is about 175 years old it is in extraordinary antique condition. This piece is fully reversible, either side is beautiful. There are two photos with the shawl folded over so you can the minor differences between the two sides. It is a truly exceptional and high quality piece.
