Description: RARE ANTIQUE CIRCA 1845 AMERICAN DAGUERREAN DAGUERREOTYPE CAMERA TRIPOD BASE - LEGS & PILLAR. ACORN FEET. As is usually found today, the first forms of American Daguerrean camera tripods usually are found with the wood camera platform lacking such as is found in the circa 1845 Daguerreotype tripod on offer. The early classic bases as we have here have become extremely rare. This is ONLY THE FOURTH (4th) DAGUERREAN TRIPOD WE HAVE FOUND IN 45 YEARS! All four were and are of this kind on offer. Twenty years ago we had one like this but with no center pillar, that went to a Daguerrean collector in Canada. This example of American Daguerreotype tripod though comes with what appears to be an original wood shaft. These shafts are usually missing when this form of tripod is found today. The shaft is of a mahogany color, whereas the legs are somewhat darker and could be walnut or a burl walnut. Mixed darker woods have been used in the tripod, all enhancing its appearance of American manufacture in an infant photography industry not more than five years old in the Mid-Century Victorian Era. Two of the legs of this tripod match, and one is slightly different, with the latter one leg about 3/8" to 1/2" longer than the other two. Apparently one of the original three legs got broken or was lost in the 1850's and a similar but not exact form of leg from another tripod the photographer used was employed back in the day. The gilt gold cast iron threaded sections to which the legs are each attached are matching and are original to the tripod - so the one wood section was only what was replaced back in the day. Each leg is normally attached by two (2) wood screws, but as one can see, two wood screws are lacking - lost long ago. The wood shaft that would attach to the missing wood camera platform, when found, was found with a hole drilled out of each end. When found, the tripod had been converted to a coat or hat rack, with other doweled wood sections attached: that have since been removed to restore the tripod back to its original form as much as possible. They were removed and a dark wood dowel was made for each end, with the bottom end glued in as shown and finished off. The top end was left unfinished and not glued as shown so as to accommodate a wood camera top section that Daguerrean enthusiasts and collectors come to make to finish off the tripod - with the smaller dowel removable or glue able to accommodate however one made need to attached to a camera platform section one would seek to make. For the production of a top, we can supply some schematics produced by a noted Daguerrean camera collector as a courtesy - if one should come to purchase this tripod base. Much original gold gilt gilding is present still on all of the three legs and on the main cast iron tripod hub center body. ACORN FEET. WITH APPROPRIATE WEAR FROM USE. For the serious and advanced Daguerrean collector, this offering is surely one that will likely not become available for many years on eBay again for sometime to come, or for that matter, anywhere for even decades.
