Description: ORIGINAL 1891 KNUD KNUDSEN (1832-1915) 'NORWAY & ISLE OF WIGHT' TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM This is a great piece. I generally dont buy too many travel photograph albums but this one caught my eye because of the incredible views of waterfalls and fjords. When i looked a little closer, I realized that this album had quite a few photographs of Norway by one of the most important early photographers from the Scandinavian country. For those not familiar with Knud Knudsen, I have included his biography below. This is a photograph album that the first page notes is from 1894, which seems to be earlier than most of the other work I have found of his. The album itself measures 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches. Spine cover is missing but binding is still strong. The first few pages of the book have 7 Knudsen photographs measuring around 8 1/2 x 6 inches laid onto the backing. Then there are a bunch of empty pages that have another 9 Knudsen photographs that are loose. These photographs show some creasing and some minor tearing and corner loss but nothing too bad. Later in the book are smaller photographs that could be Norway and could be by Knudsen but they are not signed or identified. There are some really great photographs of people. Then there are some photographs that are identified as the Isle of Wight. Really a wonderful archive of a trip in 1894, but more importantly some great original photographs by a very important early European photographer. For those not familiar with the artist, his biography reads: "Knud Knudsen (1832–1915) was one of Norway's first professional photographers and a pioneer within Norwegian photography. His work includes images from most of Norway in his time and documents much of Norwegian history and ethnology in his photography career 1862 - 1900.Knudsen was born in Odda, the son of a merchant who was also a pomologist. His professional career started as a retail clerk in Bergen, and in 1862 he traveled to Reutlingen to study pomology. He returned with an enthusiasm for photography the year after and opened his photography business in Bergen 1864.Knud Knudsen left a collection of 13.500 wet and dry plate negatives, and about 20.000 of albumin silver prints. The negative and print collection are at The Picture Collection, University of Bergen Library."CHECK THE PICTURES ON THIS GREAT PIECE. DONT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY.
