On "Goodbye," the music becomes a slow dirge, with the trumpeter leading the procession; it's as if he's eulogizing his own heartbreak with sudden flourishes and tearful long tones. However, the pangs of love are best represented on "Deep In a Dream," where Baker likens his loneliness to a cigarette burning his fingers. "My hand doesn't hurt, but there's pain in my heart," he croons. WITH FIFTY ITALIAN STRINGS features Baker in a tranquil and cozy setting. Midtempo tunes such as "The Song Is You," round out the album with blissful, sunny lyrics. Saxophones, trombones, harp, flute and oboe also add color to the set's texture and mood.
