Obverse: Ancient Greek wrestling, known as pále, was a foundational sport in Greek culture and an Olympic event from 708 BC. Held in the skamma, or wrestling pit, it was a sport focused on skill, strength, and technique. Unlike modern wrestling, competitors won by throwing their opponent to the ground three times or forcing them into submission, with no weight classes dividing them. Wrestlers practiced moves such as trips, throws, and joint locks, emphasizing techniques over raw power. Wrestling was both a revered sport and a reflection of cultural values like courage, discipline, and resilience. Champions achieved lasting honor, often rewarded with public acclaim, statues, and various privileges. Reverse: Ancient Greek slingers were specialized light infantry soldiers skilled in using slings (sphendone) to launch stones or lead bullets at high speeds and long distances, often exceeding 100 miles per hour and reaching up to 400 meters. Recruited from regions like Rhodes and Achaea, where slinging was part of daily life, these soldiers provided critical support in battle by disrupting enemy lines and targeting unarmored troops from afar. Operating in loose formations to stay agile, slingers worked alongside archers and other light infantry, weakening the enemy before close combat ensued, and highlighting the strategic value of ranged attacks in ancient warfare.
