Description: Less than half a century after Bottger succeeded in creating porcelain in Saxony in 1708, cobalt was discovered in the Ore Mountains on the border between Saxony, Bavaria and Bohemia. Almost from this point, porcelain factories began producing high style, gold encrusted, cobalt blue, sometimes called "Prussian Blue," porcelain plates. In 1794, the Tettau Porcelain Factory, the first private factory in Bavaria, received its Royal Charter, and it has continued production into the twenty-first century. American collectors often refer to this make today as "Royal Bayreuth" rather than as "Royal Tettau." When these plates were produced, Royal Tettau was owned by Wilhelm Sontag and Ludwig Maisel (from 1879 to 1902). It was during this period that the marking, (the standing lion over the boxed letter "T"), was registered at the Royal Court in Bamberg, Germany on June 10, 1887, and was used only between 1885-1902. The decoration of these 5 3/4"scalloped-shaped plates is outstanding. The delicate beautiful hand painted floral decoration and gilt are surprisingly intact. The largely pink, blue and green palette of the floral centers complements the deep blue and gold of the rest of the plate. Light dazzles off the blue and gold - candle light especially. These are very special plates and would highly adorn any festive table or add to a special collection.
