Description: 500+ Freckles Green & Red Spotted Romaine Lettuce Seeds Heirloom & NON-GMO Always Fresh Seeds for Your GardenA CRISP & COLORFUL FAVORITE FROM THE GARDEN This red-spotted, open romaine lettuce is sure to turn some heads. The mid-sized plant is open with glossy, green leaves flecked with maroon; making it a delightful and colorful addition to salad mixes. As the leaves get larger, the markings become even more prominent. The leaves of Freckles lettuce are speckled, not blotchy, so they have quite an elegant look. And the flavor is excellent. Beautiful, buttery, and speckled romaine lettuce from Austria. In Germany, it was named forellenschluss, meaning: "trout's back." Trout are fish covered in beautiful spots, reminiscent of the striking red freckles on this otherwise green lettuce. According to the Slow Food Ark of Taste, forellenschluss came to North America in the 1790s, first arriving in Waterloo County, Ontario.First cultivated as early as 2680 BC, lettuce was first used by Egyptians to create oil from its seeds, and later was selected for its edible leaves, likely also by Egyptians. Also known as Spotted Trout, Speckled Trout, Flashy Trout Back, and Freckles. Growing Freckles Romaine is no different than growing any lettuce plant. Seeds can be sown directly in the garden and will mature in about 55 days. They should be planted in rows set about 36 inches apart and thinned so that plants are no closer than 12 inches apart. Lettuce plants require about an inch of water per week for optimal growth. If growing Freckles Romaine lettuce during the hot summer months, they will require extra water to prevent bolting. Keeping the soil cool and moist with layers of mulch or straw will also help it grow through difficult weather. Keep in mind that like most lettuce types, slugs and snails can sometimes be a problem. All seeds have been purity and germination tested by the Department of Agriculture.Planting Instructions are on the back label of all seed packages. ***Please, if there are any questions or issues contact me directly.*** I will answer questions to the best of my knowledge and I will do everything possible to make your seed purchasing and gardening something you enjoy.
