Ordained as a priest at 19, Vincent de Paul finished his theological studies four years later. Vincent de Paul was confronted with the harsh reality which the poorest and neediest people lived in, and decided to dedicate his heart and soul to them. In 1617 he founded the Ladies of Charity to meet the needs of the poorest, and in 1925 he created the Congregation of the Mission to evangelize the peasants. He also built hospitals to treat those sentenced to the galleys. And in 1633, with the help of Luisa de Marillac, he founded the Daughters of Charity. Today there are more than 18,000 Sisters in 94 countries who support the poorest populations, and more than 4,000 Vincentians in 86 countries. There are two miracles associated with Vincent de Paul: a nun who was cured of ulcers and a laywoman cured of paralysis. Vincent de Paul was beatified by Pope Benedict XIII in 1720, and canonized by Pope Clement XII in 1737. He was further declared patron of all Catholic Church Charities, by Pope Leo XIII, in 1885.
