It features what looks like playing cards stacked to make a large triangle made of the smaller triangles formed by leaning two cards against each other. Upon close inspection, though, you see that these are playing cards but different currencies around the world. The other thing that every kid knows about this structure is that it is very fragile and easy to knock down. By replacing playing cards with the world’s currency, this design makes a strong statement about how stable these currencies really are. Adding to that statement, is what is going on around the structure. The card structure is sitting on two pillars. This base isn’t as true as a table might be so that is already less than ideal. On the pillars is ‘NON PLVS ULTRA’ which is Latin for ‘Nothing Further Beyond’. These are the pillars of Hercules that were at the Strait of Gibraltar. The pillars marked the end of the known world. Beneath the pillar are what look like rising tempestuous waves. The message here seems to be that paper money is no match for mother nature. The reverse is the same design as on the first two coins in the series with an enlarged Eye of Providence or all-seeing eye at the top of a pyramid which represents the idea that God sees all. Under the eye is the Roman numerals for 1776. Draped across the pyramid under the eye is a banner with ‘ANNUIT COEPTIS’ which is Latin for ‘favors our undertakings’. At the top of the coin is ‘THE AWAKENING’. Wrapping around the bottom of the coin is ‘YOU CAN’T WAKE A PERSON WHO IS PRETENDING TO BE ASLEEP’.
