Description: 19th century schoolgirl sampler (most likely English) with an unusually pastel color scheme. It features 2 rows of alphabet across the top, with symmetrical pairings of classic motifs– birds, deer, dogs, flowering trees and vases– filling the lower field. Across the bottom a line reads “Mary Applely finished this work in the 13 year of her age.” the later part of which was stitched over a single thread. An interesting feature is that the linen was unevenly woven, so the cross stitches are slightly taller than they are wide, and appear elongated. The central verse is “Have communion with few… Be familiar with one… Deal justly to all… Speak evil of none.” It is worked in cross stitches (except for the deer’s ears in long satin stitches) with silk thread. Some silk colors appear to have faded although the lovely blue-green and gold appear untouched. The pale cream linen is still very light an overall color scheme is pastel. Condition is excellent; no stitch loss, ground fabric is free from any wear. The only minor issues are the slight color fading and some stray loose silk thread ends faintly visible through the fabric. Not examined out of the frame. 16-1/2″ inches high by 17″ wide in a modern frame. Ready to hang and enjoy. A signature will be required at delivery and insurance is included in the price. Just one of a number of needlework items that we have listed right now. I'm always happy to combine items into a single shipment whenever possible. Given the size of this piece, UPS is likely the best price but I will certainly look for the best price shipping for you.
