Description: 1980 Press Photo Pacific northwest Coast Fisherman JP Meng Cape Kiwanda Dorymen PHOTO DESCRIPTION: Back of the photo reads: Photographed by Josef Scaylea Written by Patricia Latourette LucasEach are of the Pacific Northweast Coast breeds different kinds of fishermen. But perhaps the wildest and most spectacular are the dorymen of Cape Kiwanda. South of the Columbia River on the Oregon coast, Cape Kiwanda has a fleet of 200 boats which fish commercially and are launched right off the beach through the surf. it is one of the few places on the West Coast and probably in the world where the dramatic event can be observed. The backdrop is Cape Kiwanda, a windswept promontory that protects the beach from the prevailing northwest winds. Half a mile out, Haystack Rock rises, and ocean monolith covered with cormorants, gulls and other sea birds whose mournful cries mingle with the sound of the surf and the wind.In the dark before dawn, dorymen arrive in four-wheel-drive trucks and jeeps, towing their flat bottomed boats in trailers. The sand is soft down to the tideline, kept clean of driftwood by the county, which also maintains a launching ramp.Above the crash of waves, you can hear the men calling to each other as they set their poles and tighten the wires, plug their drains and warm up their engines."many of the men fish alone," says a 6-foot-4inch tom Gruner, whose boat is named High Pockets. "We start our engines before we launch so the boats are ready to go and don't cough out on before we're underway." "Once we've got everything ready, we back the boat and trailer right into the surf and stop Sharply."J.P Meng launched the Spindrift. its a race against time and tide.
