Description: Long before Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Dawn Staley's South Carolina powerhouse powered the surge in fan interest in women's basketball, the sport existed - and thrived in certain select circles. This is a rare post-tournament press guide for college basketball's 1980 National Women's Invitational Tournament at the Civic Center Coliseum in Amarillo, Texas. NWIT officials prepared the guide for reporters covering the 1980 event and then inserted a four-page spread of action photos and results summarizing the 1980 tourney. The NWIT had been held for a dozen years in Amarillo by 1980. Oregon State defeated North Carolina to capture the title. Drake defeated Virginia in the third place game, Illinois State edged Mississippi College for fifth place while Clemson nipped Wayland Baptist fo seventh. You'll find rosters and photos of all the teams including Virginia with sophomore Val Ackerman, the Big East commissioner and former WNBA commissioner.
