The two small bright spots are lasers being aimed from earth (JPL's Table Mountain Observatory in California and the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona) towards the spacecraft.It is staggering to think that the world had barely just seen the first artificial satellite launches, and just a decade later NASA and JPL were able to land probes on the moon which sent back pictures and did experiments paving the way for Apollo landings just a few years later! These came from two different collections of former JPL employees in Pasadena California.
