Kirkpatrick Memorial Fountain - Washington Square Monument pays tribute to father LeMoyne. Just where Park Street pauses for a little park known as Washington Square there is a monument that should have genuine interest for people of this city. It was given by one Syracusan as a means of keeping his father's memory alive while it also paid tribute to the Jesuit missionary who first carried out to other white men the news that salt springs could be found in this vicinity, and the monument was designed by another native. "Who's Who In America," listing the principal works of Gail Sherman Corbett, the sculptor, wife of Harvey Wiley Corbett, the architect, calls this the Kirkpatrick Memorial Fountain, but it is known to many people in that neighborhood as the LeMoyne monument because Father Simon LeMoyne, the first missionary to bring gospel tidings to the Onondaga Indians, is pictured thereon.Photo measures 8 x 10.5inches.
