Description: Note: Please study the images carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. This vintage photograph is offered for sale as a collectible item and conveys no transfer of copyright. 1946 Press Photo Blue Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Ass. at target practice Shades of our pioneers! Smartlesville, Pennsylvania - Among the wooded foothills of Berks County, old-fashioned match rifles, long-barreled and power-primed, have echoed for nearly two centuries and today, with slight concessions to modern mechanism, they are still fed, fixed and fired the same as they were when the United States was only an upstart Republic of 13 states. Time has wiped out much of the popularity of the muzzle-fed rifle. For generations a hot bed of old-time shooters, Shartlesville now has only one range - on the grounds of the Blue Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. Since its organization nine years ago, the club has gained 90 members, but these are not only old-timers. Age span of the members runs from 12 to 76 years with the ladies well represented too. Only two types of the muzzle-fed rifle are used, the flint-lock and percussion-lock. The flint-lock is by far the eldest, dating back to 1635. The percussion-lock rifle was introduced in 1807, succeeding the flint-lock as America's #1 gun shortly before the Civil War. Best known of the muzzle-loaded guns is the "Kentucky" rifle, the long-barreled weapon used by the pioneers to tame America's wilderness. Name "Kentucky" was derived from the Indian "Land of Tomorrow," or "Happy Hunting Ground." Only concession to modernity is the use of modern targets and micrometer sights. Members of the Blue Mountain Muzzle Loading Rifle Association take aim and get set to pull the trigger as their old-fashioned, long-barreled weapons rest on specially-built benches. They use only one hand when firing the match rifles. Photo measures 9.25 x 7 inches. Photo Is dated 1946.
