Description: For sale rare Irish 1940 Pennies/Pingins. These are low circulation coins, only 312,000 pennies were struck in 1940. There are numerous examples on auction sites for a lot of money. I have priced these based on their condition. Condition: Very Fine. All detail is easily visible, with only very slight wear to raised surfaces. Some, but not all of the coins retain some of their copper lustre on the hen's wing. Please note that you are purchasing 1 or more coins. I will give discounts for purchasing multiple coins and will also combine postage to save costs. This is only if purchased at the same time. Description: The 1940 Irish penny is the first of the redesigned pennies. It was struck in London because Ireland did not as yet have its own Mint. These were also the first Irish pennies struck during World War 2. The obverse face has a Hen and Chicks standing on a horizontal line (the ground). "1d" is written above the hen and Chicks and the Gaelic (Irish) word "Pingin" is written below. Pingin is the Gaelic word for penny. This is struck with the same die as all the pennies from 1928. The reverse face was struck with a newer die to the pre 1940 pennies. It depicts a vertical Irish Harp, with "Eire" written to the left of it and "1940" written to the right.
