A: This stock certificate is from Vomag Maschinenfabrik AG, Plauen, (VOMAG) a major supplier of armor and trucks to the Wehrmacht in WWII. The certificate originated in the Reichsbankschatz, a great hoard of Third Reich era stocks and bonds discovered in 1991 in the East Berlin vaults of the former German Reichsbank, having sat there undisturbed since the end of the war. Founded southwest of Leipzig in the town of Plauen in the Kingdom of Saxony in 1881, the company built and serviced embroidery machines for the factories of the rapidly growing German textile industry. It soon added rotary printing presses, and precision drilling machinery to its product line. Driven by innovation, the firm prospered in the robust Wilhelmine economy, and by 1900 it was exporting its wares around the world. In World War I the company was given contracts to build trucks for the Imperial German Army. There was an incredible need for mechanized transport (in 1914 there were only 9,500 trucks registered in all of Germany,) and VOMAG thrived. A 42,000 square foot factory was built, and 1,500 new employees were added to meet the demand. Between 1916 and 1918 the firm produced over a thousand 'standard 3-tonner' chain driven, 3 ton trucks for military and commercial use. This growth did not end with the war. VOMAG found itself well positioned in the German automobile market after the war. Corporate focus shifted accordingly. In 1919 several nearby textile mills were bought and converted to automotive assembly plants. By 1921 there were over 2,000 new VOMAG trucks on the road, and in 1923 they were joined by VOMAG transit buses. But, the good times weren't to last. The Great Hyperinflation which wracked the Weimar Republic between 1922 and 1923 saw VOMAG capitalized at 180 billion Paper Marks at its height. In January of 1925, following revaluation, that was chopped to a mere 8.1 million in the new Reichsmark. VOMAG didn't face such a drastic contraction alone; its customers suffered similar financial fates, and demand cratered. Production numbers reflect the decline: In 1925/26 VOMAG produced 644 trucks. In 1926/27, it made 302. The company recorded its first annual loss following the Wall Street Crash in 1929/30, wiping-out three quarters of its value. From a peak of about 6,000 employees in 1922, numbers would dwindle to 1,600 in 1930. In 1930/31 only 151 vehicles rolled off the production lines. The company struggled on over the next year, and despite all efforts, fell into receivership in 1932 with only 500 employees left on the payroll. Adolf Hitler took power in January 1933, and VOMAG's fortunes began to improve. The economic policies of Hjalmar Schacht (Reichsbank President 1933-1939, and Economics Minister 1933-1937,) in the early years of the Third Reich stimulated the demand for trucks of all types in construction and transportation, and new roads called for new buses. VOMAG met the demand by introducing over thirty models of trucks and buses in the course of the next 20 years. Even in the middle of the war, half of the firm's revenue would come from that sector. Because of capacity constraints, VOMAG did not much profit directly by the military expansion which began in 1935. It was only in 1940 that the company became involved by at first repairing tanks for the Wehrmacht. Soon thereafter it began building half-tracks, such as the well-known Sd.Kfz. 9 heavy type. Innovating within its limitations, VOMAG developed an electrically powered 8.8 cm flak gun mounted on the reinforced chassis of its Omnibus 7 OR 660 dual axle bus. Two dozen were built before production ceased. Upon completion of their massive 'Panzerhalle' works VOMAG commenced building its enhanced version of the Pz.Kpfw. IV, the Panzer IV G (Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf.G [Sd.Kfz. 161/1] as seen above,) and delivered over 400 by 1943. In September 1942 the Army Ordinance Office placed an order with VOMAG for a low profile, flat topped tank destroyer with improved frontal armor, to be based on the chassis of the Pz.Kpfw. IV. In May 1943 Hitler approved VOMAG's design and the Jagdpanzer IV went into production. Approximately 1,700 were made in Plauen during the war. A prototype is pictured above. There were three variants: Ausf. IV / 48 (Sd. Kfz. 162) - It mounted a 7.5 cm Pak 39 as its main weapon . Ausf. IV / 70 (V) (Sd. Kfz. 162/1) - It mounted an extra-long 7.5 cm PaK 42 L/70. Ausf. IV / 70 (A) - Up-armored. It mounted the same 7.5 cm PaK 42 L/70 as the (V). In March 1945 two devastating United States Army Air Force bombing raids struck the largely undefended city of Plauen, putting VOMAG out of commission and destroying most of the city center. After the war Saxony fell within the Soviet Occupation Zone. Under the occupation VOMAG briefly reopened to make wheelbarrows and handcarts that were needed for hauling off war debris. In 1946 the Soviets expropriated the company, stripped it of much of its equipment as war reparations, then demolished the Panzerhalle and other buildings. In 1948 the new East German (DDR) communist government nationalized what was left, which consisted mostly of the headquarters building and some of the light machine works nearby. The DDR did invest in redeveloping the works and the concern was renamed VEB Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Vogtland in 1953. Divested of its printing division, it focused on machine tools. At the 1961 Leipzig Trade Fair it showcased a dozen new precision industrial drills and boring machines (which caught the attention of the CIA). With the fall of the Berlin Wall and German Reunification approaching the company was taken private in 1990. After a brush with bankruptcy it operates today (2024) as WEMA VOGTLAND Technology GmbH. It specializes in retooling and overhauling of machine tools, primarily for the automotive industry and the automotive supply industry. You will hold history in your hands.
