Etna Pours Forth Rivers of Molten Lava: Approximately 16,000 persons are homeless, fleeing for their lives as Mt. Etna near Palermo and Messina, Italy, is in violent eruption. The volcano had showed signs of increased activity during the past week and yesterday following a series of loud explosions, followed by deep rumblings as of thunder, Etna's main crater opened, pouring down rivers of molten lava. Thousands of tons of rocks and ashes were hurled to a height of from thirty to sixty feet from both the old and the new craters, and the lava streams advancing on a frontage of about 500 yards, laid waste vineyards and forests in their path, moving at a speed of a mile and a quarter an hour. Linguaglosep, about two miles from the center crater is almost surrounded by lava. Several houses in the town have collapsed but the 16,000 inhabitants have fled. The important railway station of Castiglione was destroyed and the population of 10,000 is reported to have fled. Photo shows Mt.
