Undated, it is from the tenth issue authorized by the law of 1919. It pictures François Duvalier, also known as “Papa Doc”. He was a physician by profession and earned his nickname due to his medical background. Duvalier became the President of Haiti in 1957, running on a populist and black nationalist platform. His regime quickly turned autocratic, and he established a notorious secret police force known as the Tonton Macoute, which was responsible for widespread human rights abuses and the suppression of political opposition. In 1964, Duvalier declared himself “President for Life”, solidifying his grip on power until his death on April 21, 1971. Duvalier’s rule was marked by a cult of personality, and he incorporated elements of Haitian mythology into his governance. His son, Jean-Claude Duvalier, succeeded him and continued the family’s authoritarian rule until he was overthrown in 1986.
