1899 Government Report. Freedmen's Hospital Affairs, Management, Expenditures

Description: 1899 Government Report. Freedmen's Hospital Affairs, Management, Expenditures Freedmen's Hospital was established in 1862 in Washington, D.C., during the American Civil War, primarily to serve the medical needs of freed African Americans. Initially created by the federal government as part of the Freedmen's Bureau, it provided care for formerly enslaved individuals and African American soldiers. The hospital played a crucial role in addressing the health disparities and neglect faced by African Americans in the aftermath of slavery. Located near the historic Howard University, Freedmen's Hospital became an essential institution for both medical treatment and the training of Black healthcare professionals. In 1868, the hospital officially affiliated with Howard University, eventually becoming the university's primary teaching hospital. This partnership allowed it to be a center for training African American doctors and nurses, at a time when educational opportunities for Black medical professionals were scarce. Freedmen's Hospital also became a symbol of hope and progress for African Americans, providing critical medical services in a segregated society. Over time, it grew in size and scope, offering increasingly advanced medical care. In 1975, the hospital was absorbed into Howard University Hospital, which continues to serve the community and provide education for healthcare professionals, carrying on the legacy of Freedmen's Hospital. 21 Pages PDF Book on CD-R Disk.
