Description: RARE USA DOG ART PHOTO ILLUSTRATED HISTORY BOOK: THE AMERICAN BOOK OF THE DOG, edited by G.O. Shields, Rand, McNally & Company, New York Publishers, First Edition 1891, Bright Blue Cloth Hard Cover with Gold Gilt type and Mastiff and Greyhound Head Study Monogram, 6.5" wide by 9.5" tall, 702 pages, 4 lbs. 10 oz. Numerous full page plates, photos, drawings, artwork, engravings, woodcuts, the monumental list of illustrations presented in its entirety in my photos. Very minor wear to edges of covers, illustrations free from marks, overall excellent condition, the book is basically in as new condition. Excellent condition considering that this volume is 120 years old. There are now modern reprinted editions, but this is an original, hence the value to a collector. This book followed on the heels of the publication of The Book of the Dog by Vero Shaw (1879-1881), which echoed the dawning of the widespread interest in Pure Bred Dogs that would soon take hold of the UK, Europe and then America. These large, definitive, encyclopedic works on the Dog helped people see and learn about and understand the specific roles played by various dog breeds, and hopefully helped them find suitable companions for themselves and their families. An extensive volume, and very worthy of its important standing in canine history. This Auction is for the book pictured, I took the attached pictures 4/8/22. I do not ever scan my fine old books, as the spines are fragile and scanning requires laying them open flat, which can be damaging. I take photographs instead. Colors are actually richer than shown here, as my light box dilutes the colors slightly. Minor edge and shelf wear, small tear at top of spine, boards very slightly warped. Overall great condition for a book that is over 80 years old. Note: Only one of each item is available at this time, and one never knows when (or if) another may be available!!
