Henry Fielding was a popular English novelist of the eighteenth century, one of the founders of the traditional English novel alongside Samuel Richardson. Though important in the literary world, Fielding is also noted in the history of law enforcement, as he founded the Bow Street Runners, the first full-time police force in London. Tom Jones is probably Fielding's best known work, a comical picaresque Bildungsroman originally published in 1749; here illustrated by W. Small. This ten volume set includes many of his best known and most beloved works. Volumes I and II contain Leslie Stephen's biographical essay of Fielding and Tom Jones; Volume III contains Amelia; Volume IV contains Joseph Andrews and A Journey from this World to the Next; Volume V contains Jonathan Wild; Volume VI contains Fielding's essays and legal cases; Volume VII contains A Voyage to Lisbon, as well as his legal papers and poems; and Volumes VIII to X contain his dramatic works, including The Miser, The Temple Beau and The Grub Street Opera. CONDITION In half morocco bindings. Externally generally smart, though lightly rubbed to the joints, raised bands and extremities, with a little fading to the spines.
