Pew and Sons was founded in 1849 and Slade Gorton and Company was founded in 1874. In 1906, Slade Gorton & Company, John Pew & Sons, and two other Gloucester fisheries merged into the Gorton-Pew Fisheries. They made Gorton's codfish cakes a household name in New England. The company went into the fish-freezing business in the early 1930s. In 1949, Gorton-Pew made headlines when it drove the first refrigerator trailer truck shipment of frozen fish from Gloucester to San Francisco—a trip that took eight days. In 1953, the company was the first to introduce a frozen ready-to-cook fish stick, which won the Parents magazine Seal of Approval. In 1957, Gorton-Pew Fisheries name was changed to Gorton's of Gloucester; in 1965, it became The Gorton Corporation, and it is now known as Gorton's. In 1968, Gorton's merged with General Mills, Inc., as a wholly owned subsidiary. In May 1995, Unilever bought Gorton's from General Mills. In August 2001, Unilever sold Gorton's and BlueWater Seafoods[1] to Nippon Suisan (USA), Inc., a subsidiary of Nippon Suisan Kaisha, Ltd., for $175 million in cash. John Pew, a landmark fish dealer had 17 vessels that plied the George’s Banks . The company merged with the Gordon Co. of Gloucester forming a fishing conglomerate that today maintains a leader in the fishing industry. John Pew & Son was located in the heart of the Gloucester business district, and the entire facility occupied five acres of land. In 1894, when an article about the firm was published, they had a fleet of 17 vessels, which were said to be part of the best engaged in the business.A large portion of the Pew firm's property were filled by flake yard -- they occupied several acres. This article goes on to note that when one tours this area and those filled with deep rows of hogsheads, that the air is redolent with the healthful odor of fresh and salt fish. Gorton’s history started in 1849 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Gorton’s is a product of a merger between John Pew and Sons and Slade Gorton and Company, two companies that were engaged in the fishing industry. John Pew and Sons was founded in 1849 and Slade Gorton and Company was founded in 1874.John Pew and Sons was engaged in fishery while Slade Gorton and Company was engaged in salt-drying fish and selling it to the market. The merger between the two companies happened in 1906, along with two other fishery companies in Gloucester. It was then named Gorton-Pew Fisheries. In the 1930s, Gorton-Pew entered into the frozen fish industry. Nineteen years later, the company acquired its first trailer truck equipped with a refrigerating system. This was a major innovation in the seafood industry at the time and the company was heavily featured in the news. With the company’s new transportation vehicle, it began making shipments from its headquarters in Massachusetts to San Francisco, California. In 1953, the company was the first to introduce its ready-to-cook frozen fish stick, which received the Seal of Approval award from Parents magazine. Four years later, the company’s name became Gorton’s of Gloucester and was changed again to The Gorton Co. in 1965. In 1963, Gorton’s was able to acquire Canadian company Bluewater Seafoods. A year after, the company launched its products packed in a new Gorton box. In 1968, Gorton’s went into a merger with General Mills and became a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Mills. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an incredible testimony to early New England fishing heritage. Pew’s ornate engraved graphics will enlarge into mural format without losing substantial resolution. Perfect for home , restaurant or fish market decor.
