This design came about when noted miniaturist Robert Ball Hughes reworked key elements of Gobrecht's original Seated Dime. On the new type one can see extra folds of drapery at Liberty's right (facing) elbow on the obverse and a slightly enlarged reverse legend. Additionally, the obverse shield is now upright, and Liberty has a slightly heavier, thicker appearance.
