Description: I have here for sale a book entitled THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE VOL V July-December 1735, and VOL VI January - June 1736 by SYLVANUS URBAN printed for the Author, London, in 1736. First edition. This book contains all twelve monthly issues of the magazine published from July 1735 through to June 1736. Amongst the weekly essays, proceedings in parliament, and poetry selections there is a lot of coverage on the disputes with Spain and France and the necessity or otherwise of maintaining a fleet and an army; teh suppression of Geneva (Dutch gin); Dr Stebbing's letters to Mr Foster; a letter concerning Popery; Proposals for the Revival of Christianity Doctrine of Abstinence from Blood; Proceeding on the Act against Spirituous Liquors; and an article on the Downfall of Rome."The Gentleman's magazine" was a monthly magazine founded in London by Edward Cave in January 1731. It ran uninterrupted for almost 200 years until 1922. Cave, who edited the magazine under the name Sylvanus Urban was the first to use the term magazine for a periodical. Cave's innovation was to create a monthly digest of news and commentary on any topic the educated public might be interested in, from commodity prices to Latin poetry. Cave developed an extensive distribution system for the magazine and it was read throughout the English speaking world.Half bound tan leather on marbled hardboards with a little wear to the leather. Burgundy title block with gilt lettering and gilt bands on the spine. Bookplate on the front endpaper. Light foxing to some pages. All pages are firm and the book is in very good condition. Vol V: pages 337-778, plus Indexes 15 pages.
