Description: Up for sale is a one-gallon size large Dwarf Cavendish banana tree. The plant in the photo is one of the plants that will ship with this listing. These are 16" in height. Some have offsets forming, which can be divided into new plants when they get bigger. This is also a good size beacause they are suitable enough to go into the ground where they can put on rapid growth or upgeaded to larger pots, but they are still practical for shipping before they get too tall. By the time you fold the leaves up, the plant can be nearly double its length, which requires a long box. An established root system is more important than height when buying banana trees. These are established plants rather than start plants like many bulk plant seller offer. Those can still be finicky and may be starting to just take hold of the soil at the time you would have a plant taller than you with this size plant. Dwarf Cavendish is a dwarf version that produces the type of banana you are familiar with seeing in stores. It is a favorite of the commercial industry for its reliability and good size fruits. They also have reddish purple markings in the leaves that add to their ornamental appeal. These plants are over a year old and have a very established root systems. As you give bananas like this more space and water, they can really grow impressively fast and the individual leaves can be a few feet long. Once any pups are about a foot each, they are good to separate into their own pots. Most sellers only offer starter size plants, which lack the root system and will grow slower and may even die back. We have bought starter plants that were only as big as the pup on the plant in the photo. Some of the starter plants are quite tiny and some are weak. They are usually just plugs grown in peat pellets. This plant has been in a covered area but is acclimated to the Florida sun. Even if you cut off all the leaves, this plant has the root system to bounce back. So if you experienced frost, this plant is capable of bouncing back much better than a starter plant. Bananas are perennials and can survive frost with a bit of protection. You can mulch the base and entire stem up to the leaves. Every year, the plant will grow back bigger as thr root system grows. But once the plant fruits, cut off the main stalk, and it will pup out again. That means once you get a good plant going, you should have banana trees every year. They look awesome, the leaves are useful, and that all makes them one of my favorite plants to grow.
